Introduction

We live in a society preoccupied with youth, where we reward those who seemingly don’t age at all and consider it virtuous to change minimally as we age. This sustains entire industries such as cosmetics, surgery, compressive garments, diet and of course, fitness.

Old people often feel invisible and less valued in our society.  Our sense of self feels the same throughout our decades, while our bodies continue to evolve in ways that may look or feel strange to us (who is that person in the mirror?). We are still valid, with bodies worthy of care and attention.

I celebrate my age (63 this year) because although I don’t have the same amount of decades in front of me as I do behind, the rest of my life deserves to be as full of optimism, opportunity, development, and movement as it did back then when my 12 year old self was photographed. It’s universally accepted that a child’s development must be nurtured, and we know that movement is an important part of every child’s growth. The 63 year old woman also has her whole life ahead of her! She also deserves and requires nurturing, care, attention and movement!

In my work, including this course, I try to bring that attitude and celebration of who you are at any age to life. We don’t need to turn the clock back, we need to look forward and continue to nurture and develop the spirt and the body we are in.

Change your relationship with your body

This course features exercises from the book "Dynamic Aging" by Katy Bowman. Although recommended, reading the book is not mandatory for enrolment.

With over 10 years as a Nutritious Movement™ Certified Restorative Exercise Specialist and teacher trainer, I bring my experience as a RES and as a fellow Dynamic Ager to this course. You will be taught this material by someone who understands your challenges.

The number of participants is low so that I can give you personal and individual attention.

The classes feature closed captioning for those with hearing issues (or to watch quietly).

6 Classes

Each week you will receive two pre-recorded movement classes. You will do those classes (at least once) before we meet for the live class at the end of each week. Each class is packed with info - so I suggest a few viewings.

3 Live sessions

At the end of each week, we  meet for a live session where I watch your form, answer questions and generally give you the support you need to optimise the material. This works much better than me teaching and trying to watch you at the same time.

Bonus session

The last class is a course review class and this brings the class content to 10 hours in total. Included also are bonus exercises not in the book and a final live session to wrap up and discuss next steps.

Support material

Each lesson is accompanied by a suggested equipment list and relevant material in order to give context to the exercises.

Message board

There is an on-site Community Board (no Facebook!) where you can introduce yourself, ask questions, and keep in touch throughout the course.

This course is designed for those who have a desire to move more, average 55-70 years old, but I’ve also had younger people take part (we're all ageing!). Some participants are retiring from a desk career and want to get the most out of retirement plans. Some have been "working out" and doing everything right but still experience issues associated with ageing and would like to know what else they can do.

In these classes you will need to be able to get to the floor and back up. You should be comfortable getting to the ground, even if you need to do so slowly or with assistance of a chair or other stable object.

This course is perfect for you if you have the book Dynamic Aging and want to learn more, or learn how to do the exercises with good form, or generally have the support of live instruction and others like you.

I am not a physio nor am I medically trained. This course is not for people who are seeking treatment for specific issues. This course utilises movement solutions only. If you aren’t sure if this course is for you, simply use the support button to send an email and I’ll get back to you.

You can use a chair or the wall for support in this course. Standing for an hour or balancing without assistance is not required. Throughout the course I will give you options so that you can always work within your abilities. The classes are slow and methodical and you can stop when you reach the level that you are comfortable with. You are encouraged to ask for support and modifications.

The kind of equipment we use for this course is similar to that found in a yoga class. Mat, blankets, blocks, strap, and bolsters are helpful. You can use common household items for most of these. We also use a half dome. Apart from that, you will need internet connection to stream the classes and attend live classes. Make sure your area is free from debris that might trip you or hurt your feet as ideally you will be barefoot (if possible).

You will learn changes that are simple, easy to understand and execute, and can be integrated into your current daily activities. You will learn assessments, exercises and lifestyle changes that can help to maximise your movement practice without a lot of extra time. Most people are surprised at how easy these changes are and often result in reduced pain and discomfort, and greater confidence moving and walking. Some of the testimonials can be seen below. You might also make friends in the community and draw comfort from learning alongside your peers.

Every Monday for three weeks starting Jan. 30, you will receive the week's classes. You will complete them at your convenience before that week's live session. During the live sessions, I will help you with the exercises and answer all your questions.

I highly recommend you attend as many live classes as you can to get as much from the course material possible and to learn individual modifications and be checked on your understanding of the exercises and how to apply them optimally.

This course will be on the site for the duration of 6 weeks (four weeks of the course + two extra weeks so you can review/take notes/practice). This is not a lifetime access course.

The material is released one week at a time at the beginning of each week. Every week consists of two hour long classes, equipment list and support material. You will get access every Monday and be expected to have viewed them on your own time before Saturday, when we will meet for a live session. During that session, I will check your form, make suggestions and answer any questions you may have.

Everything is on this website. Once you purchase, you will make an account with your email and a password. When you sign in to carolrobbins.ca, you will see any courses that you have purchased. Simply head to the DA course and start moving!

Navigating the website and the course couldn't be easier. I made sure of that because I built it myself! I did not have a tech person make my site: I made it, and I made it with you in mind. I recommend using Chrome browser on your device. You will get an email reminder when the week's material is available with a link for your convenience.

Participant Feedback:

I believe this class was the best experience I've had where the practitioner was able to "meet me where I am".

It’s really helped my knee. I used to take three glucosamine and chondroitin for pain and now I don’t take any. I am hoping to avoid surgery.

Before this course, some things I found frustrating that I couldn't completely understand; how to actually drop my ribs, how to bolster properly, and also what knee pit neutral meant. Having you explain it in the course and go through it step-by-step with us was extremely helpful.

I had not made the connection between over stretching my calves and re-tensing. I know it is going to help me out so much. I can already feel that I am not re-tensing after calf stretches AND I am able to figure out how to relax the other parts of my body.
